  Draft Other Language Standards

At this time, the study of foreign language is optional and not a Diocesan core subject. Some schools offer "food, fun, and fiesta" enrichment activities which are not standards-based. In those schools which offer Foreign Language curriculum, students are expected to achieve the standards listed below.

FOREIGN LANGUAGE CONTENT STANDARDS

  • Students will communicate in languages other than English
  • Students will demonstrate knowledge and understanding of cultures other than their own, through development of insight into the nature of language and culture.
  • Students will use the language both within and beyond the school setting.

FOREIGN LANGUAGE STUDENT PERFORMANCE STANDARDS

Student performance standards are developed by individual schools, to meet or exceed competency levels as outlined in the California State Department of Education 1989 publication, "Foreign Language Framework." A guide to competency levels is found on p. 45 of Appendix B of the Framework. These are. Novice, Intermediate, Advanced, Superior, Distinguished. The competency level expectations for grade levels may vary from school to school.

Performance standards will include accuracy in demonstrating the

  • knowledge of appropriate vocabulary
  • ability to engage in conversations
  • understanding and interpretation of the written and spoken language
