   Basic Certification Guidelines (updated September 2006)

Course of Studies: The course of studies is consistent with the General Catechetical Directory, the National Catechetical Directory, and carefully follows the Catechism of the Catholic Church.

Workshop Requirements: a minimum of 5 hrs./topic. Of these five hours, three hours must be spent in content development. One hour must be be spent in dialog/discussion of the content. The remaining hour may be spent in either or both areas. Total course of studies for Basic certification is 50 clock hours.

Doctrinal Development: (40 hrs.)

  • Profession of Faith: 8 hours total
  • Celebration of the Christian Mystery: 8 hours total
  • Life in Christ: 8 hours total
  • Christian Prayer: 8 hours total
  • The Nature of Catechesis and Catechetical Development: 8 hours total

Spiritual Development of the Catechist: (10 hrs.)

  • Prayer Experiences
  • Retreats
  • Spiritual Direction

Continuing education (renewal) requirements: 10 hours per year. Certificates must be renewed every 4 years. 40-hour renewal requirements must include 5 hours of Church History, Scripture and Spirituality (Retreat). The remaining 25 hours can be in any area.

 

GUIDELINES - CONTENT OF BASIC WORKSHOPS

(ALL topics must be included in a Basic workshop in order to receive credit for the workshop):

 

Profession of Faith*: Revelation, Scripture/Tradition, Faith Response, Trinity and the Image of God, Christology, Redemption, Church, Mary and the Saints

Celebration of the Christian Mystery*: Paschal Mystery, Sacramental Theology, Liturgy, Sacraments of Initiation, Sacraments of Healing, Sacraments at the Service of Communion

Life in Christ*: Dignity of the Human person (Virtues), Sin, Grace and Redemption, Ten Commandments & Beatitudes, Catholic Social Teaching, Conscience Formation/Decision Making

Christian Prayer*: Call to Prayer, Lord's Prayer, Prayer/Worship, Prayer Styles, Leading Prayer, Introduction to Scripture (may include the following:) Revelation & the Oral Tradition; Hebrew Scriptures including the Torah, prophets and wisdom literature; Christian Scriptures including the synoptic Gospels and the Epistles

Nature of Catechesis/Catechetical Development*: Faith and Human Development, Nature of Catechesis, Catechetical Process, Nature of Culture as a context for catechesis and religion, Family as context for catechesis, Evangelization and initiation, Learning styles & teaching styles, Use of media & technology, Teaching of Religion, Use of resources (8 hours total )

Spiritual Development of the Catechist*: Combination of 10 hours total, Prayer experiences, retreats, spiritual direction

*Catholic School Department and Catholic Faith Formation have developed learner expectations for each of these workshops. A learner expectation focuses on what the participant gains from the workshop.
