  The SUCCEED Program

Sacramento Urban Catholic Children Equal Education Development

THE NEED

To provide a quality, values-based education for children from all socio-economic backgrounds, including those in depressed, urban areas.

Children in Sacramento's urban Catholic schools were dramatically affected by the demographic and staffing shifts of the 1970's. More affluent families were moving to the newly-built suburbs, and schools, previously staffed by religious communities of Sisters, began hiring predominantly lay staff at higher salaries. This trend impacted schools in the urban areas in a profound way. Many Sacramento inner city schools were, in fact, in danger of being closed as others had been across the nation. The result: Those children who might attend those schools would be left with no educational choice. What was needed was a program that would assure financial stability to these schools-these children in the inner city of Sacramento.

THE MISSION

The Mission of SUCCEED is to build and maintain a secure financial base that assures the viability of Sacramento urban Catholic schools.

(Revised & Accepted, June 1997)

In 1986, after much study and planning, the urban Catholic schools in Sacramento joined forces with community leaders to establish a plan that would ensure the longevity of their inner city schools. The coalition they formed was named SUCCEED; Sacramento Urban Catholic Children's Equal Education Development. The program they established provides a guaranteed income to urban Catholic schools, thus assuring support into the 21st Century.

THE GOAL

The goal of SUCCEED is to have $1 million endowed for each of the seven schools. The earnings from an endowment of this size will help assure the viability of the SUCCEED schools and will assist in providing scholarships to students without the financial means to otherwise attend Catholic school.

During the first decade of SUCCEED, "survival" was the name of the game. What SUCCEED hope to achieve was to keep the schools open as "beacons of light" in depressed, urban areas.

As SUCCEED begins its second decade, however, it is looking to build the inner city Catholic schools into models of educational excellence. If inner city children are to succeed in a technological world, they need a tchnological education. If inner city children are to be proficient in an age of communication, they need the tools and reseouces that will give them that proficiency. If inner city children are to become self-sufficient and self-motivating, they need models who can nurture those qualities. All this takes capital resources.

THE PROGRESS REPORT

Over 2000 children have graduated and have gone on to successfully complete high school; not one of the charter schools has had to close; four of the schools have achieved financial solvency through the help of SUCCEED, and the other three are gaining ground.

To date, almost $4 million has been endowed, with another $1 million held in various assets.

The endowed assets are administered by the Roman Catholic Bishop of Sacramento as are all Diocesan related endowment accounts, including those of all schools, parishes, and cemeteries. A separate accounting of each endowment account is maintained by the Bishop, although the funds are pooled for purposes of investment.

The SUCCEED endowment and its earnings are guaranteed to be used soley for the purpose of supporting the SUCCEED schools.
