Competencies for High School
Entrance
Students should be aware of the significance of
national and state historical events and the importance of community
in their own lives. They should demonstrate understanding,
compassion, and support for those of different races, ethnicity,
economic background, and religion. They need to become leaders who
value peace and service in the global community in which they now
live.
The Catholic high schools expect entering
students to have basic competencies in the social studies areas.
These competencies are in the areas of reading, writing, mapping
skills, time references, understanding and use of primary sources,
thinking skills, and a basic understanding of early American history
as well as the development of culture in other areas of the
world.
Social Studies Skills
- Use of longitude and latitude to locate
sites on a map or globe
- Locate the states of the Union and their
capitals
- Use time-lines to reference past
events
- Read actively, take notes, organize
information, draw logical conclusions from facts
- Demonstrate correct use of grammar,
spelling, punctuation in written work
- Write topic sentences and organize
paragraphs
- Properly cite print, media and Internet
sources used as references in written work
- Learn and apply rules of comparison and
classification
- Show cause and effect
Content Areas
- Awareness of cultural contributions of
peoples living in various times and places
- Some understanding of the structure of
national, state and local governments
- Recognize contributions of the 17th,
18th, and early 19th century Americans in critical areas such as
civil rights, economic and social development
- Recognize the contributions over time of
peoples in Western and non-Western civilizations
