How to Crumble Cookies (from The E-Travel Bulletin)

Step-by-step instructions on how to disable some or all cookies in Internet Explorer.

Internet Explorer 5.x - Windows PC

To toss your cookies in any Internet Explorer 5.x version on a Windows PC, you've got a little work to do. Pull down the Tools/Internet Options menu and click the General tab. In the Temporary Internet Files section, click the Settings button. In the next dialog box, click View Files. Select View from Menu/Details, then click the Internet Address column to sort the files by type. Highlight all files that start with "cookie:' and hit the Delete key. Close the Temporary Internet Files directory and click OK in the Settings dialog box.

Now click the Security tab. Select the Internet content zone (by clicking on the globe icon), then select Custom Level. Scroll down the list of Security settings until you reach the Cookies section; under "Allow cookies that are stored on your computer," click the Disable option. Do the same under "Allow per-session cookies." Click OK, then click Yes when it asks you to confirm your changes. Then click OK again.

If you want to pick and choose your cookies in IE, you'll need to follow the steps outlined above, only this time tell the browser to Prompt instead of Disable you for each one. Then prepare for a slew of dialog boxes that ask you if you want to accept a cookie when you visit a wide range of websites.

Internet Explorer 5.x - Macintosh

Click on Edit (from the top menu bar), then Preferences. When the IE Preferences box appears, scroll to Cookies in the left-hand box and click. You'll see a list of all the cookies on your hard drive. Highlight the whole list, then click Delete. To delete only select cookie files (keeping ones for websites you use regularly), highlight them individually or in batches and click Delete.

You can also set the way you want IE 5.x versions to accept or decline cookies. In the Preferences box below Delete, you'll see the line "When receiving cookies:" and a scroll bar with four options: Never ask, Ask for each site, Ask for each cookie, and Never accept. Select your preferences and click OK.
